Shelley: Speak From the Heart

By Shelley Graham

This is basically a Mexican peasant top — striped, embroidered, tasseled, trimmed, and puffed, but in a fresh, exciting arrangement. The shoe is basically a suede beaded espadrille, but holding nothing back in its vibrant colors and bead pattern. The wool belt is hand-embroidered with flowers by a South American craftswoman, in the centuries-old tradition of her ancestors, and blends so well.

The jeans are destructed with ragged hems and subtle embroidered messages: “HERE AND NOW” on the back waist, “DON’T BE A FOOL…” on the right leg, and ‘…AND BUY ME A DREAM.” on the left. Why are the jeans saying things — I don’t know, but it’s so cool!!

A Little Background Music

EDITOR’S NOTE: “Despacito” has become not only the Song of Summer 2017 at No. 1 for 14 weeks, but the most streamed song in history and the most watched YouTube video of all time with over 3 billion views, as well. Entirely in Spanish, most of us have NO idea what it’s saying, we just know it’s good! (Welll, it’s not too hard to figure it out, lol.) But removing language, we are really able to hear the swells and falls, open spaces, chord progressions, repeated cycles, trills and frills, just all the emotion and drama. There couldn’t be a more perfect song that matches this blouse!
